It all started when brother Rene and wife Lorna Evidente visited Illinois on April 29, 2008 to raise awareness of the Work With The Poor (WWP) projects in the Philippines. The Couples for Christ Handmaids of the Lord of the Chicago suburbs, immediately made plans for a fundraising event. This resulted to a Hawaiian Luau with all the ingredients of an authentic Hawaiian community get-together.
The event took place on July 26, 2008 at the Cornerstone Restaurant, the very place where brother Rene made his appeal to the community. The place was decorated with Hawaiian motif; the dinner was exclusively Hawaiian (Hawaiian Chicken Kabob and rice pilaf), with Hawaiian inspired three generational dance presentations, and a DJ that catered to all kinds of music for the young and the young at heart. The guests came with their Hawaiian attire, complete with leis and flowers on the ladies’ heads.
It was a fun evening that lasted to the wee hours of the morning. On the financial point of view, the fundraising was a success. Brother Rene was very pleased when informed that the event can fund the construction of two homes for our poor. This means two more families whose dignity, hope and faith shall be restored.
